Trinny and Susannah: 1 Me: Nil

Buoyed by your encouragement to wear them high and proud when I lamented the high neck / big bosom dichotomy, I made myself a cowl tunic last night. I didn't fall in love with it immediately, because Good God, just look at that:

But it grew on me, and I'm wearing it today. But you can't make me take my jacket off.

Thinking that I could *cough* reduce their prominence *cough* will some changes to the pattern (namely lowering the neck a bit and widening the body so it's not as tight), onto version two. The neck is better methinks. But the body? Urgh. Too shapeless. I think I will shorten it to hip height to balance it out and I can still wear it as an underlayer.

And if you're wondering where my head has gone, at some point without noticing I turned into Nosferatu. So a good day all round.

NB. One thing that has completely delighted me, however, is that the author of Design-It-Yourself Clothes has officially validated The Cool Girl's Club by commenting on my blog. Seriously. Go look for yourselves.

  1. I love how you can just go 'I want to try this item of clothing out' and you just make it! I'd be like 'But I need to wait til payday, and only if the kids don't need something, and if all the bills get paid and oh sod it'.
Incidentally I actually think it quite suits you.

  2. I don't know about in person, but from here the first tunic looks great! Great that your Club has been officially validated. I will join some day (I just ordered a machine, Yay)!

  4. Re: cool girl comment - Rock and Roll! I got my book yesterday and love it.

I think the cream one looks pretty and would love to see a hip height version of the other. It gives me hope that maybe I can sew something for my big boobies and not look bad.

  6. as a size 6 with a 34E chest, i can relate to your woes. but, the cream colored tunic looks great on you! i think it's because the white color doesn't create as much depth around the chest. the red one - i think that you're on to something by cutting it shorter. i wonder though that if by doing too much of a roomy cut that you're actually accentuating the bust. because then the fabric floats away from you. does that make sense?

  7. The cream looks ok from here, although personally I'd prefer the fit of the second one.

And how cool is that comment, wow:)

  8. sooo great about the comment from Cal! I got my book yesterday and am dying for the kids to go to bed tonight so I can settle down and look it over.

and seriously Amanda, you look fabulous in both versions, but especially the cream...I so wish I was skinny and had big boobs...women pay big bucks to have implants to look like you! I guess we always want what we don't have right?

  9. Boobs are great. Cream one is my fave. My book came today. Gonna make the Rosie Skirt I think. I can't stop talking in short sentences. And I just made a vow not to sew until my BIL moves all his crap out of our spare room. Better break that vow sharpish. Yay for the cool club validation. Oh, and lost my tape measure.

  11. They look great. I have the opposite problem to you. I look like a boy with virtually no chest at all to speak of! I'm still waiting for my book but Amazon have assured me its on its way. I thought it might be lonely so had to buy a couple of other sewing books to go with it!! Very cool to get a comment from the author on your blog. Almost as cool as my signed Phillip Schofield photo but not quite!!

  12. I love the cowl neck! It's so funny, b/c I just finished mine today, in recycled turquoise cashmere!! mmm! I highly recommend it!

That is so cool about the sewing club! I'm on the fence about whether I can make it happen, so I might have to hop on at the last minute!

  14. Liking the first one very much. Could you make the cowl bigger though? Not necessarily a lower neckline, just more fabric in the cowl. And shape / length is always really hard to get right...First one definitely looks neater though. I am enjoying your adventures in growed up clothes :)
