And now, for something completely new...

I've been wondering recently if that if I'm backing myself into a corner and becoming too niche. There are a lot of sewers out there but my patterns are really just reaching the one's with toddler girls. So a little experiment from me... Remember this bag? I think this is going to be my next pattern. I've been working on it the last couple of days and should be completely done with the tutorial by the end of the weekend. There are two different sizes, and you would need a maximum of a yard of outer and lining fabric, a 14" or 12" zipper, an 8" zipper, and two metal rings. So, anyone want to test it? It'll be a pdf so I'm not going to show the slightest preference to UK people this time. Even if you don't want to test, I be interested in hearing what you think about dipping my toe into the accessories market!

  1. I would love to test it from a novice at sewing if you would like incapable people to try it out?

  5. Great idea, definitely my sort of bag. :)

If I can find the zipper foot to my machine, and if I have enough yardage I'd love to test the pattern... will get back to you!

  7. I love the bag! I'll test it for you if you are still looking for testers. As we all know, I have *ahem* a bit of material and stuff ;)
As for the branching out, I'm on a bag lady so I limit myself but the way I look at it, there are more people out there than I can possibly make bags for so I don't worry too much about it. Go with what you want to do, I say.

  8. I love it! I wold also be happy to test it for you.

I think diversifying is good. It is a smart branch to make as well. This is a line that will appeal to your current customer base, as well. Your clients are mostly likely women anyway, and anyone with kids needs a good bag.

So this really makes sense. One line can draw customers to the other. You can also use some of the same materials for both lines, so it minimizes your investment and overhead.

    Well done!

  11. Darn it, I would love to test your tutorial. Didn't know UK-ians didn't PDF. (The don't? Strange country.)

I think you'd be swimming in your orders and sales. But wait a minute... aren't kiddy clothes more sale-able?

  12. Would love to do a test if you're still looking. I've made a few bags and have some new material crying out for a new project!

  13. I'll raise my hand for testing, especially if you want someone who usually sews way over her head and spends a lot of time looking puzzled and crying. Is that your target market?

I also agree with the comments that this is a natural extension of your customer base. Moms are always looking for something pretty for themselves, or a little treat like a cute bag.

  14. Ooh, I would LOVE to test that baby for you! I'm pretty sure I can scare up some appropriate fabric.

I totally can see bags as a natural extension of kiddie stuff. I mean, what Mom doesn't want a hot bag?? I do!

  15. Me, me, me, please! Like the idea of different patterns too - not that I'm adverse to cross-dressing my son for the sake of sewing nice things of course.
