Handmade gifts FTW. For the World. And the Win.

I'm still playing 'Make Gifts for People I Owe Gifts To'. It's a really fun game. All you do is act really pedestrian on someone's birthday, promise to make them a gift 'when you're less busy', and if you still have a friendship when you're less busy, then you make them something.

It has the added bonus of being practice for all the gift-making you're going to do for Christmas. Probably.

This is (obviously) a fabric cover for a year planner. But clearly that's not enough to make it up to someone who's been waiting for present for an indecent time. I am going to make everyone I know a makeup bag.

So there we go then. Christmas... what does everyone craft as gifts? So far I can make handbags, makeup bags, phone cosies and notebook covers, but as I've already given everyone in the world these already, what else can I make? If I'm not too busy.

  1. Love that fabric! You know, the sew mama sew blog did a big holiday roundup last year (year before too, maybe?). This year so far I'm planning to make watch bands and/or belts, probably with some kind of funny saying silk screened or embroidered on them chosen for the recipient. Eeeeeasy and quick, but still a little cool for non-sewing sibs. And have you seen the t-shirt necklace making the rounds?

Then again there are always jewelry bags, the make-up bag's little cousin.

  2. I have absolutely no idea, as I've already given most of my family the things I can sew for them without endless fittings and consultations, which rather spoils the surprise. And anyway takes so long that I'd be starting now for Christmas 2011.

I forsee a lot of vouchers in my family's christmas stockings. In my defence, I do have to lug it all up on the train from Bristol to NE Scotland with me.

  3. These are really cute. I may be making gifts this year as well. Cosmetic bags sounds like a good one, I need to find a tutorial or pattern.
That will be my project for the weekend maybe. Deciding what to make for everyone.

  4. Top idea Amanda. I make childrens slippers, which is OK for the little people but not anyone else, so am trying out big peoples to see how I get on. Problem is sourcing the suede for the soles as jiffy grip wont cut it for these. I love your makeup bags, shame I'm not owed a gift!

  5. I'm planning on making as many pressies as possible. I've just used some liberty lawn fabric and some twed to make a great scarf so that might be in everyone's chrimbo stocking this year. Although my family does a secret santa thing as there are millions of us and it means that you only have to get one person something - boys wear scarves too, right?

  6. I've seen some nice quilted coasters. But this year I'm doing my normal thing of asking what people want and then getting something along those lines, unless they ask for knitted items. My niece may be getting spotty pjs though. If I get them done in time anyhow.

  7. Those are lovely things, and it's really nice to get something from someone, when you know that they've actually made it for you. Your friends will be so pleased.

    Tea cosies? Cushion covers?

  8. Hi Amanda, I'm making gifts this year too - so a kindle cover, iPad cover, cushions, childrens quilts, jewellery roll. Now did you follow a tutorial for the journal cover? If so where from and if not how'd you do it!!! Justine

  9. Awesome notepad cover! I can only make truffles (well, crushed Oreo cookies rolled in melted chocolate) for neighbors, but I wrap them in a nice bag with a fancy ribbon and feel much better about myself. You are so industrious!

  10. The makeup bags are great - I'd be delighted with one! My lots get bespoke cusions and if I'm feeling uber generous / energetic - quilts (especially if there are babies in the offing as there will be this year...better get on with it!

  11. My sister requested an apron for christmas...I thought she was going to ask me to stop making their gifts! Seriously! And then she tells me that she wears her daughter's apron, which I made, all the time.
I might try a couple of make-up bags this year too...yours are lovely, as is the covered planner.
