Cheering myself up

I did another frozen seven hour stretch at an outdoor market yesterday and another seven hour indoor market today. Despite last weekend being busy and selling heaps, this weekend was so quiet. Does anybody know where all the Christmas shoppers were this weekend?!

I'm feeling a bit down about sacrificing a whole weekend for nowt, so I thought I'd share something that recently made me laugh.

I originally saw this on Have I got News for You a couple of weeks ago, and I looked up the source tonight. Some very funny things on his website! Anyway, it is a series of emails between a man and a company pursuing an overdue bill... You might have already seen it as I guess it was really popular, but as I only really talk to Jamie and Maia (and occassionally Steven), no one told me about it.

She rejects the spider in lieu of payment so he asks for her to return the drawing...

When we were having the ridiculous problems with Scottish Gas and Scottish Power, I wish I had done something like this!

Doing exactly as I'm told

Jamie likes drawing, but he really likes telling me what to draw. He fires off instructions rapid fire and it's always 'Jamie, Maia, Mommy, Daddy, Sun, Moon, Jamie, Maia, Peppa, Dinosaur' Apologies that the verissimilitude is less than perfect for all depictions, the instructions are rapid fire and I struggle to keep up.

He has recently gotten into the Christmas spirit and yesterday he started to do a drawing by himself... Remembering that it's more fun to tell Mom what to do, I was given his sweet potato shaped drawing as a starting block and was ordered to draw. Here is a catalogue of his requests:
  • Snowman
  • Snowman's nose
  • Snowman's eyes
  • Ice cream on Snowman's eye
  • Eyebrows
  • Snowman's tongue
  • Hat
  • Ice cream on Snowman's hat
  • Arms
  • Hands
  • Fingers
  • Ice Cream on Snowman's fingers. Two Ice creams on Snowman's fingers.
  • Chest
  • Ice Cream on Snowman's chest
  • Tummy button. Three tummy buttons. Ice cream on tummy button
  • Snowman's feet
  • Snowman's toes
  • Snowman's knees
  • Ice Cream on Snowman's knees. Two Ice creams on Snowman's knees.

Now that's my kind of Snowman!

Folksy finds food

Here is this week's taster (geddit?! sorry, I'm really tired...) from Folksy. Everything is food inspired! It took two nights to compile the list (with Folksy crashing last night), but we got there in the end!

I'll start with a bunch of funky, foody brooches... I wish I had the bravado to wear these outside the house!

Contender for the coolest brooch in the world! I love this beans on toast brooch from Pippin.

I may not like mushrooms in real life but it's impossible not to like this mushroom brooch from Kate Broughton.

How realistic is this yummy looking Turkish delight in brooch form from Handmade with Amour?!

The things that people can make with felt are amazing! Here is a boiled egg and toast soldiers from British Cream Tea. Check out that beautiful stitching! It's worth checking out her full shop too, full of felty food stuff!

Lupin's felt fancy pincushion looks delicious, I'm seriously tempted by it... Not entirely convinced it wouldn't end in A&E after a toddler felt / pin ingestion session though! Again, check out her full shop for more foody felty delights!

Another toddler A&E trip would be necessitated by these delectable cupcake candles from Purple Sparkle Crafts. I can't believe the realistic foody candles in her shop!

I think even adults would be tricked by these soap truffles from SoapyChica... maybe an A&E trip for Steven?!

This sushi necklace from Venus Flytrap Jewels is a real conversation piece and taps into the Japanese zeitgeist perfectly.

Pennydog has some beautiful resin jewellery. This kiwi fruit ring is made from polymer clay encased in resin and I'm wisting it! I don't have enough cool jewellery...

More bird coats?!

Bet you're scratching your head and thinking, "What's with her and all this bird stuff?" I admit, birds are all over this blog, namely in the coats I've been making in the last couple of weeks. These thematic obsessions pop up in my stash without me noticing. One day when I'm staring at the tower of fabric, I see that there's heaps of bird stuff. Go figure, I don't even like birds very much.

This one is single breasted and has seagull-type silhouettes in black with bluey accents on a white background, some of the beaks are red. The reverse is blue and white polkadots, and there is also a 'goretex fleece' layer in the middle. Again, machine could not cope so sleeve edges and back hem are slip-stitched. Although machine grudgingly let me topstitch the orange coat, it would not let me topstitch this one. I do actually like the 'cleaner' lines without topstitching though. Both sides have red polka dot buttons.

On the subject of the goretex fleece interlining, someone left a comment on my orange / nightmare coat post saying 'FYI, there is no such thing as Goretex fleece' and then disappeared into cyberspace again. I have to admit, I was a bit flummoxed by that comment and its abrupt tone. Plus I am selling these coats and felt unsure whether I could say it had a Goretex Fleece lining, or just mysterious, definitely non-Goretex fleece interlining. Anyway, I put it to the fount of knowledge that is Craftster, and I've been assured that it does exist. Phew...

The second coat is the same lime green velveteen as the Amazing Technicolour Elf Coat. Like the orange / nightmare bird coat, this one is double breasted, but with four buttons instead of six. No inner fleece layer for this one (I couldn't bear it) and it has a hood instead of a peter pan collar.
I modified the elf hood to more of a pixie hood, it's slightly more fitted so it's not as dangerous!
The reverse side is Alexander Henry's Aviary fabric. Both sides have pink and white polkadot buttons.

I was struggling with the layers shifting all about so I had to unpick and redo some bits... figured out that my machine didn't like when the velveteen was down on the feed. So it took a lot longer than it should have! The pics came out badly, the the colours are a lot more muted than in real life.
Here is an updated pic of the spotty side of the orange / nightmare coat. Remember I was agonising over what colour to use as I 'did not want orange'? Look... orange.

I've been staying up so late working on these coats, last night when I crouched down to spread my buttons out, I fell over.

I passed my citizenship test! (or not...)

This is what my post should have said today:

"I finally completed a Sudoku from Scotland on Sunday. While this may not be the official litmus test for citizenship of the UK, I will be sending in as corroborating evidence when I do get around to applying for citizenship here. I can do the News of the World Suduko in exactly 8 minutes every week, the Metro Sudoku in about 12 minutes, but the Scotland on Sunday has always eluded me. I was so proud to complete one, I ripped it out and photographed it as a reminder that the mighty feat was achieved at least once."

This is what my post does say today:

"Drat."

When I uploaded the picture to share my success with the world, upon admiring said photo one final time before sending it into the ether, I spied a pair of double 4s and 9s....

No thank you

The holidays are fast approaching and the question on everyone's lips is 'What do I get the kids for Christmas?" They're still so little, and I'm nervous about setting a precedent for profligacy that will lead to years of expectation and escalation. But everyone's asking us what to get the kids for Christmas and I'm not sure what to answer... So, being a negative sort of person, here's some things I don't want them to get. This is by no means a comprehensive list, some go without saying. Like nunchucks. Or a subscription to Hustler. Or My First Crystal Meth Home Chemistry Set.
I've sorted my no thank you gifts into rough categories:

The gifts that set a bad precedent

We all want to give our kids the things in life that we didn't have. But not this much.

If we purchased this kitchen, our real kitchen would cringe in shame.

This rideable, interactive pony offers "pony motion, pony sounds and pony friendship". I think it's the pony friendship that's so expensive, I could do pony motion and pony sounds with a piggyback.

A life-size, rideable, interactive baby dinosaur. Nevermind where you'd put it.

Look how smug these kids look. It probably because their parents are driving around in a ten year old, beat up minivan. Or maybe that's just us.

Bad ideas

Do you work hard trying to get your child into proper routines? In one fell swoop, ruin years of your hard work with one of these gifts!

'In the Night Garden Upsy Daisy and her Chase and Play Bed' I'm having enough trouble keeping Jamie in his bed without a toy glorifying the chase / bed dichotomy. I suppose the saving grace of this gift is that it is the bed that is being chased, not the toy. Bit like getting your toilet training toddler a doll that needs the loo but the toilet won't stop moving so they have to go in their pants.
'Don't wake Dad!' I'm all for this as a mantra, but as a game? Here is the spec: "Will you wake dad and get sent back to bed or will you successfully tip-toe around... Take care as there are hazards" Was this game manufactured by Jamie Inc?! I can tell you, we are living in this game and it's not a fun 'un.

WTF?? (sorry Mom, I didn't coin the phrase...)

The gift market is so overloaded and competitive, how does a retailer set their gift apart from scores of similar items? By adding an element that makes you think WTF of course!

'Puppy Grows and Knows Your Name' Watching the commercial for this puppy, you see the puppy getting bigger, learning tricks, wagging it's tail and you think 'Hmm, that's not too bad, it's teaching kids a sanitised version of dog ownership... the growing, the learning, the moving..." And then the dog turns its flat button eyes to camera and says "My name is Satan". Or something similar, I repressed the memory.'Baby Born Baby, Horse, Car and Trailer' There are lots of baby dolls offering 'realistic' functions... they eat, and pee, blink, sleep, learn to talk, sit in buggies, you can comb their hair, and dress them, change their nappies. These babies do almost all the things your baby might. Childcare professionals suggest that if your trying to get a toddler used to the idea that a sibling is on the way, get them a toy baby. But don't get them this baby. This one drives a car (pulling a horse trailer no less), dressed in her finest riding gear, and then rides an actual moving horse. Later, baby goes for an un-aided swim. And drives a motorboat. Guaranteed to give your toddler sleepless nights and an inferiority complex as he worries about the freaky addition to the family, who not only will be lavished with expensive accoutrements like cars, boats and horses, but will be also be capable of superhuman feats when he can't even put his underwear on the right way round.

Oops...

I had big plans for tonight. Hitting the clubs with the girls? Nope. Dinner and a movie with Steven? Nope. Nice meal and a DVD? Nope. I was going to finish the tute for the double breasted coat so I can send it to my lovely testers, finish an actual coat that I had started last week, and (of course) write a scintillating blog post. Maybe not 'big plans' in the traditional, non-pathetic way, but it's about as big as it gets for me these days.

And then Jamie wouldn't stay in his room. So I spent the evening escorting him back to his bed, getting absolutely nothing done in the process. Steven went to bed so I was the only sentry on bed-returning duties. Desperate to get him back to sleep (parenting experts look away now...), I sat in his room, in the dark, until he fell asleep. Which happened sometime after I fell asleep.

Here is a treasury I made last week, with a teeth theme.
