The Misanthropist breaks radio silence, has mixed feelings

For the last month, this is how I've categorise humanity*:

*Except people who read this blog. Unless I also know you in real life, in which case I probably at the very least want to push you over in the snow.

It's been a very trying month between Jamie's chicken pox, Maia's chicken pox and then school closures because of the snow. In what should have be my busiest and most profitable time of the year, I've lost seventeen days of childcare, more than 50 hours of sleep, six packages in the mail and probably a four figure sum in lost sales at a time we need it most. It's been frustrating to say the least, and I've mostly resided somewhere between ragey and stabby.

But now that life will (hopefully) return to normal on Monday, I can reflect on something positive that's come out of this month: I've rediscovered that Jamie and Maia are actually rather delightful. It's been a long time since I have spent full days with them and an even longer time since I've spent full days with just one of them. Individually, without the constant sibling squabbling and with my (mostly) undivided attention, what a joy they are to hang out with. Even when the snow sequestered both of them in the house, the three of us relaxed into a more content threesome. Buoyed with the success of our Christmas-themed redecoration, we even attempted more Christmas crafting and made some angels for the tree. Angels look like bats, right?

Only two time-outs were administered during the making of this ornament.

Angel's smiling face courtesy of Jamie. Jamie's red snowball face courtesy of Dad (accidentally I should add).

These ornaments are unlikely to make it to the tree as they insist on sleeping with them.

I think I might miss them a bit come Monday. But I am looking forward to an uninterrupted shower.

  1. {{{{big fat squidgy hugs}}} and you can push me over in the snow any time. Maybe hold the kung fu kicks and stabbiness for others though.

Sorry you've had such a crappy month - hope things improve soon.

Oh, and you have spectacularly beautiful children, you know - pox and all.

  2. Sounds like a miserable month, but cheerful children. And the ability to take an uninterrupted shower is vastly underrated by people who aren't parents in my view.

  3. Oh please tell me school will be back on Monday - we had all of last week off and while I love having my munchkins home, my floors are begging to be clean for a whole 10 seconds. :D

  6. Hurrah for silver linings and time with charming kidlets. Sorry for your snow worries.

I just went to your shop and purchased the hoodie pattern. It cost almost exactly the same as a paypal refund I've had languishing in our account, so it was clearly meant to be mine. I put it on my to-do list when Rylee started wearing her hood up on ANYTHING with a hood. Very gangster. Hope it helps! :)

  9. I was just going to say that the chicken pox had a similar affect on me with Oskar. I DREADED being stuck in with him for two weeks, I mean, I had the FEAR. But at the end of the time I was really sad to see him go back to nursery. I learned to enjoy him again and see how sweet he really is when he is not being a difficult 4 year old.

  10. We have had 4 days off school, (and apart from the first day, when we were a bit lost as to what to do) like you and many others, it would appear, we had a ball. The kids made Christmas cards and Lego, and snuggled on the couch, and we just generally enjoyed time together. However...I got a text from the school this evening to say that on Health and Safety grounds, the school will be shut for another two days, and Wednesday is a school holiday here! So we have another 3 days of it...

  12. You are so funny! Glad the kids are feeling better - that was some nasty pox (I was in the 2%). And how low can you be to steal a snowman's head???
