The State of the Girl

eye patch 1

It's been eight (long) weeks since we started the eye patch regime. At the initial appointment to access her eye problems, we found out that the vision in her lazy eye was poor enough that her brain had turned off the signals from that eye completely. Even with her glasses on, she couldn't see past the first line of the eye test! With instructions to patch six hours a day, they were hoping to see a fifty percent improvement in the bad eye. And now we've had our first follow-up appointment and.............. There's been an eighty percent improvement! The bad eye has almost equalised with the good eye, so we only have one month at four hours a day and one month at one hour a day.

We are all beyond pleased, and so proud of how brave she's been. It's not been easy, her confidence has taken a serious knock and there has been some major angsting, but she has never refused to wear it and for that I'm eternal grateful.

I've been continuing to make her new patches based on her complaints feedback on the earlier ones. The rolled hem edges were proclaimed scratchy, so I started binding them in satin bias binding, which also has the added benefit of stabilising the dome shape so her eye can remain open. The stiffer dome shape (and also the large size) has also ensured that peeking around the edges wasn't possible. The optometrist said that my version is better than the one that the NHS has been recommending so that was a bonus :)

Addendum: As far as I'm aware, there's no one who reads my blog who currently has a patching child and would therefore be interested in a tutorial, but if that ever changes or if someone finds themself here who wants to know how to make one just leave a comment.

UPDATE: The tutorial is here!

  2. HURRAH for Maia! For the results and bravery! For beautiful smiles on happy girls!

When I saw that picture of the three you have I was going to suggest you sell them. They're adorable and I'm sure they would sell on etsy. And be a public service to boot.

  5. Yay!!!! Congrats.

I had to wear a patch when I was a kid, I only wish I had one like yours rather than a giant plaster type thing with NHS pink glasses. It was foul.

  7. You should totally do the tutorial for these eye patches. We did our rounds of patching for a vertical strabismus (eye rolling up) and used the stick-on patches. What a nightmare!! While our daughter didn't wear glasses, we would have gotten a pair so that she could use these. I scoured the internet for tutorials and was unsuccessful. A tutorial would have been a godsend for us. Our daughter went on to have surgery on both eyes and the problem has been 99% corrected - I'm really happy to see that your daughter's problem was identified, that you've gotten good care, and that the patching is working. So much to be thankful for!! Thanks for sharing!!

  8. These are awesome.

My cousin had to patch for a long long time, and I kept meaning to make him a fun patch but never got around to it. I'm about 90% sure he no longer needs to patch though.

  9. What a cutie! I had to wear a patch for my lazy eye in the early eighties. I can still smell the adhesive fabric patch in "skin tone" that I had to wear. My lovely mum used to draw an eye or a sun or flowers etc on the patch to try and liven it up for me. lol I wish I'd had one of these beauties! I think a tutorial would be a great idea! :)

  10. I feel very happy that Maia is recovering so fast! I'd be very grateful if you could post a tutorial. My nephew was diagnosed exactly the same as your daughter, but after wearing the patch for four hours a day during the last two months he hasn't improved at all. Now he has to wear it the whole day! I think he'd like to wear a more comfortable one (he wears the sticky ones).
    Thanks.

  12. Yay for Maia! Couldn't you sell your pattern to the NHS? All kids who need patches would benefit from them.

  15. These are awesome! I would love a tutorial. My 4 yo daughter got glasses about 5 weeks ago and now needs to patch 4 hours a day. These seem soooo much better than the sticky patches. Thx!

  18. LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!

This is so bloody brilliant. We are to go to the Orthoptist next week as Katherine has a lazy right eye. We'll have to go through the eye drops routine and then I suspect, glasses plus patch.

If I could do a few of these for her in her favourite fabrics then it might be easier to keep it on her face :-)

    Note the word 'might'?

  19. We have to patch 2 hours a day. We are also doing at home therapy and we have to patch while we are doing that too! Little J has the same problem.
