Forays into swimwear

I had every intention of making my own bathing suit this week because I don't have one that's not heinous. But I was mildly distracted by carrying 103 yds of fabric, 49 patterns and 28 items of clothing to the Post Office. Yes, the Mega-sale was a mega-success and I'm eternally grateful to everyone who ordered! Thank you :)

But I did manage to make Maia's suit. In the morning she was quite cooperative, and happy to try on the bottoms (using my boy briefs pattern). By the evening? Not so cooperative. But lucky for me I still have one agreeable child. The tank is the racer back style I'm working on.

This was the first experience sewing with spandex and it was both easier and harder than I expected. Weight wise it's pretty hardy so I didn't have to battle with curling edges like some thinner knits but the four-way stretch flumoxed me when binding the top and resulted in some distortion. Overall, it's a pretty passable effort and I'm crossing my fingers that Maia comes around because she doesn't have a suit either!

  2. You did a great job!! The suit is beautiful!! My first experience was when my brother asked me to make a lightweight wet suit. Oh my goodness!!! It was like a giant jumpsuit with bias binding. It turned out very well, though.

  4. poor Jamie, he just doest realise how much these modeling sessions are going to come back to haunt him, especially at his sisters and i suspect,, mothers glee. The suit is adorable! If you ever manage to create a ladies swimsuit that flattens the tummy, and has a built in boobie support that holds bigger than an A cup,, you will have to make duplicate so i can have one too. x K

  6. That looks great! I've just bought a new swimsuit because I hate my old one, but the new one's not much better. I don't know what style I'd like really.

And I reckon Robbie would love a pink polkadot tankini...

  7. Cute! I haven't finished mine yet because lake shirts got in the way, but this makes me want to jump back into it.

  10. If you were making these for sale I would definitely buy one for Brodie. I've been having difficulty finding anything suitable in the shops - something not frilly girly or not tarty and inappropriate for a 3 year old. This looks fab.
