Just in time for spring (and ultimately summer), I have finished my long-sleeve dress pattern. Obviously long-sleeves are not a problem in the land of infinite winter but I should probably get my skates on for a short sleeve or sleeveless dress pattern. I can't even imagine the need for such things sitting here next to my calor gas heater.
Speaking of skates, I'm tentatively naming this The Skater Dress due to its fitted bodice, curved dropped waist and drapey flared skirt. Truth be told, skater dresses are normally much shorter. But then there's this:
Still modest despite high-footed stomps which is important in this family. Personally, my preference is for more above the knee; Maia is (inexplicably and maddeningly) unhappy with any dress that is less than Amish-length ankle.
Houston, we have dresses...

Lol, love it! She's funny that little gal! The dress is super cute!
ReplyDeleteLovely! I think it looks perfect the length it is.
ReplyDeleteI love it!! And I'm with you - shorter. If you made it longer, we wouldn't get to admire her rainbow boots!
ReplyDeleteTiny would love it, she also loves skating so it would be perfect on the ice.
ReplyDeletelovely dress. looking out for short sleeve dresses. miss m is very picky. she was wearing a pinafore dress in the hail and snow today.
ReplyDeleteLove it...and your Amish comment totally hits home. My daughter has a hideous dress that she absolutely loves that my husband refers to as her Amish dress!
ReplyDeleteI think it is the perfect length! Mid-calf always! :D
ReplyDeleteMaia's hair is LONG! Robbie has just looked at the pictures and said 'she looks pretty' and 'that's a funny dress with all those cats on'. That means he likes it!
ReplyDeleteShe actually just got a haircut! Her hair grows at turbo speed :)
DeleteIt looks great, Amanda! I showed my 4 year old and she said longer :)
ReplyDeleteI quite like longer at first and then shorter the next year!
Would you have time to make a mushroom rainbow one please?
Making a rainbow mushroom one today!
DeleteBagsie, bagsie!! Pretty please!
DeleteSize? Maia is a larger-than-average four year old and this dress is a 5y/6y, to give you an indication of the sizing :)
DeleteI think that would be fine :) She's 41" or 104cm tall, 22" chest and growing fast, lol.
DeleteI like at or above the knee, too. But back in the day, when I loved reading Little House on the Prairie books... I was all about long, full skirts. Well, that lasted into high school. Maybe make her a ridiculously long skirt or two and that'll answer the craving? At least it'd protect her knees when she trips over it...
ReplyDeleteLovely dress. It looks really comfy. Will you be selling the pattern?
ReplyDeleteYep, I will be releasing this pattern after I've included the short sleeve option too.
DeleteAwesome, thanks!
Deletemy two cents : I think a maxi length dress would work if it was sleeveless. Such cute fabric!
ReplyDeletei'm totally with you. whenever i see skirts past the knee i always thing it looks too big. this seems to be a big trend in home sewing, unfortunately, especially with the preschool crowd. a skirt that hits mid-shin on a 3 yr old would be 350% cuter if it hit mid thigh, imo. your length is perfect.
ReplyDeletealso, i don't think my life will be complete until i own a pair of those boots in my size. and wow, maia looks JUST like you in that picture with her hands up!

Anything longer than the knee just get in the way of kids playing in my opinion! Maybe for a formal occasion but not for day-to-day.
DeleteCute dress and model. We might need a short sleeve version for half an hour in April?!
ReplyDeleteMaybe the longer it is the more princess-like it is? Munchkin isn't bothered by length, but demands that all skirts / dresses must be 'twirly', so this one would pass the test.
ReplyDeleteThat's funny, one (in the litany of) complaints was that it was not twirly enough. Tough customer :)
DeleteJust tell her that the dress IS twirly enough, but that she wasn't twirling right ;)
ReplyDeleteYou are playing with fire, my friend. Woe betide if I said that to her :)
DeleteI think that is a super length you've got there on the dress. My Missy Moo would wear that in a heartbeat. That is the best ever fabric. Love the cheesy-grin cats!
ReplyDeleteLove it!

SO cute. My daughter prefers long too, I think it's a princess thing. I am in love with her boots. Where did you get them? I'm curious if they'd ship to the states.
ReplyDeleteThey are Molo rainbow boots. Got ours from Little Stomper in the UK but you might be able to find them in the States!
DeleteSo reasonably priced . . . until I added in shipping. I think I'll fret over them for a while.
DeleteWhat a fabulous dress! I love that fabric and the fit on your daughter is perfect!!
ReplyDeleteNicely done.
~Michelle
I would go a tad shorter too, but it looks super cute and comfy! What fun fabric! :)
