The Mission Impossible Missoni Frock

missoni frock full

After much procrastination and angsting, I finally cut into the Missoni fabric on Thursday to make my dress. For Friday.  I am nothing if not predictable in my last-minute ways.  Unfortunately the cutting was disastrous.  I thought it would be easier to cut on the fold so I painstakely matched all the zig-zags up the side seam, but when I unfolded it must have been off grain as the curves on the left side bared little resemblence to the curves on the right.  So I had to true up the sides, which inevitablely threw off the zig-zag matching.

And never the twain shall meet.  The loose-weave sweater knit was also so unlike any fabric I've ever sewn (or ever will again to be honest) that it needed mahoosive fitting adjustments. Three times I had to take it in and all the curves that followed my measurements turned out to be unneccessary.  That'll teach me to make my muslin out of basically a polar opposite fabric*.  In all seriousness, though, 97% of party-goers would not have noticed the abysmmal pattern matching.  I must learn to accept compliments graciously rather than saying things like 'But just look at how the zig-zags are so unmatched!'**.

I kept the natural zig-zag edging at the bottom after tidying up all of the dangling yarn tails.

And here is my supremely handsome husband.  The End.

  1. well I for one have never liked matching patterns on clothing. I find them horribly pretentious in their perfection. At least you can go about in this dress knowing that it isn't looking down it's nose condescendingly at the garments other people are wearing.

(seriously though, it's truly fantastic. You are an evil fabric sewing genius.) (i meant the fabric is evil, not you.) (it's past my bedtime.)

  4. Well, you look so fabulous in it no one should be paying much attention to whether or not the zigs zag together or not!

  5. Man oh man you, if someone tells you you have a nice figure you don't point out you have ugly feet, the dress is fabulous and you should revel in it! Revel, i say!

  6. It looks wonderful! Such a flattering dress (in a good way, not in a you-look-awful-and-need-flattering way), and I had to back and examine to see the non-matching pattern.

  8. Wow that dress looks amazing, I love the fabric and I really don't think it matters that the zig zags don't match up.

  9. That dress is incredibly flattering. I'm with Cindy - everyone will be so distracted with the perfect fit they won't even notice the seams.

  15. It looks great! The stripe mismatch isn't particularly jarring, and you actually got a good match in several places.

Steven looks smug to have such a hottie by his side. :)

  16. Wow! I have to admit, I couldn't imagine that fabric as a dress when you first posted it, but it really does look amazing made up. Good job!

  17. Va-va-voom! I'm sure you had every eye at the party admiring you, I mean your dress. ;-)

  18. It looks fantastic! Grown-up, fabulous ladies must learn to accept a compliment graciously. It's difficult, but a skill that can be mastered. If saying "Thank you" seems just too bald-faced to start with, or as if you agree and think you *are* quite fabulous, put on some training wheels and say "What a kind thing to say."

With that knock out figure and mad sewing skillz the compliments aren't going to stop!

  20. I have to admit, I had my doubts when you revealed your plans. The outcome is fabulous. Never mind about the zigs not matching the zags. You really dont notice that till you tell us to look. The first thing you notice is how stunning that dress is and how stunning you look in it. Job well done.

  21. Looks amazing, well done! sometimes fabric is too precious to cut into but this was definitely worth it and matched zig zags are for losers.

  22. Stunning! And the heads turning were probably drawn by your figure and the dress, not the side seams!
