It's finished and it's BIG

I finally finished the bag this weekend and it turned out lovely. It is a celebration of straps. A long adjustable one that means I can wear it across my body or just over my shoulder, there is a strap that goes under the bag from metal ring to metal ring, and two shorter ones that run over the base onto the sides. They're all lined with fuchsia polka dot fabric for peeking.

The top of the bag has a zippered closing to keep all of your bits safe, it's lined with the same fuchsia polkadots and it has an integral zippered pocket for segregating super precious bits. So far, so glowing. The rub (because I always have one)? It's much bigger than I expected. Which is silly, as I'm the one who drafted the pattern.

I've not long been resident in the World of Handbags, I used to rely on backpacks or changing bags or just pockets and compartments on the buggy. Add that to the fact that I'm not a proper girl with all the requisite girly accoutrements, I really don't carry that much around with me and this largesse is probably surplus to requirements. The plan has been, however, to have this pattern include two sizes. This one is fourteen inches tall by fourteen inches wide and the smaller one is twelve by twelve which doesn't sound like a big difference but because it has a separate flat bottom totally is. What do you think, is this overkill or should I just still to the smaller bag because that is my preference?

  1. I'm not really a "proper girl" either, but always seem to have a ridiculously large quantity of handbag items. I'd love to see this pattern available in the larger size too, to accommodate all the crap I lug around with me: phone, keys, purse, filofax, reading book, water bottle, umbrella, make up bag, notebook, chewing gum, perfume, handcream, snacks... :O

  2. Hey, some girls like their bags big. I know my sister does. The bigger, the better. Offering 2 sizes makes sense (since people have varying tastes), unless it is going to give you more work, or cause more hassle?

  3. This one is already drafted and it looks great! You should totally include it! With 2 kids in diapers, I use a BIIIIG bag. This would totally do it for me.

  4. I love the bigger bag. Not that I am carrying around much for myself, but in this one a diaper or two, a bottle and a toy would easily fit and I could get rid of the washed-out changing bag.

  5. Big is better! I switched to a smaller bag when my daugher was potty trained (thinking I could downgrade to a smaller one at that time), but all that happened was that I'm cramming stuff in and it's falling out and I have a secondary bag.

  6. Do 2 sizes. I don't really need a big nappy bag anymore but often take an emergency nappy and wipes out just in case along with all the usual stuff like purse and keys so I tend to use a big bag like the one you made. Now got to fit inhaler and big spacer thing in it for Sam too!!

  7. I agree with keeping both sizes. I would consider the larger one as a school bag for my oldest. She thinks she wants something other than a backpack.

  8. Very nice, Amanda! You should offer both sizes. FYI, fabric.com has that line of fabric on sale (but it ends tonight)for under $6/yard...also some Horner and Sassaman home dec that would make nice bags. I am placing an order later if you wanted to add to it, just e-mail me.
