Mermaid party frock

Another project completed in my prolific computer-free week: a mermaid party frock! When I think back on my childhood, the thing that strikes me now is that I was abused or at least neglected. Because I never had a mermaid party frock.

The cut of this dress makes me happy, I think it has quite a old-fashioned retro look. Like the little girl in Mad Men but about 14 inches longer.

Like Erica's party frock, it has a very gathered skirt (58 inch hemline) so it's good for twirling.

And the other side is a lovely heavy linen. I took pictures as I went along so hopefully a tutorial will follow shortly. Yes, I realise I have whole post dedicated to asking people to test but if anyone wants to shout out now that'd be awesome.

  1. Oh! That's adorable - I love that mermaid fabric and the cut is beautiful on Maia. I'd be happy to be a tester for you, if you like!

  2. Yoo hoo!

I know it's a long shot, as I am in the states... but if you need a tester, my little one is a size 4 and always ready for a party (and any outfit that involves a dress or skirt).

Also, I was organizing my stash and it's embarrassing how much fabric I have.

(Did I miss the winner of the coat pattern?)

  3. Gorgeous. Happy to test if you don't mind waiting a bit. Love that fabric!

  4. That's beautiful! I especially love the mermaid fabric. After my sewing realted disasters over the weekend, I am fill with renewed admiration for you super-sewers!

  5. um... shout out! :) would love to test, though i'm in the states. my little one is just a year old.

have you had luck with the hard drive and finding someone to crack it?

  6. Shouts ''COO'EEEE'' whilst waving arms in air like a mad woman!

Love the mermaids. We should start an 'I was deprived of a mermaid dress as a child support group'

  7. I love that dress! Maia looks beautiful :)

  8. I'd love to test. I don't want my daughter to know the neglect of no mermaid party frock. Plus, I spent an obscene amount on fabric this weekend and need to justify it.

  9. I'd be happy to test again for you :) - I'd do aged 2-3 for Katie.

In fact a pre-requisite of skirts at the moment is that they have to be "twirly". I spent almost 20 minutes with her yesterday, trying on every dress and skirt that she has to see which ones are twirly enough!! LOL

  10. that is truly scrumptious!!! i love it.
if its suitable for not very experienced sewers then i'd love to give it a go too.

  11. Such a lovely dress and the mermaid fabric is gorgeous!

I'd love to test for you I have a 4 year old that would love a party frock!

  12. I would LOVE to be a tester! I have a 3 year old boy and a 2 year old little girl!

  13. Hullo

I would love to test as long as it's a fairly easy pattern. I need to make a dress for Miss P's 3rd birthday. She's in 2-3 clothing.
