The symbiotic potential of me and you

"A symbiotic relationship is a relationship between two entities which is mutually beneficial for the participants of the relationship. Thus there is a positive-sum gain from cooperation."

A symbiotic relationship is normally between two species: in this instance you are a human and I am a zombie.

Lately my days have been starting (abruptly and unwillingly) at about 4AM, this morning with a safety gate deposited on my head by a naked toddler as I slept on the floor of said toddler's room. Due to lack of sleep I'm becoming serious disorganised, if not legally insane.

But what does this have to do with a symbiosis between me and you? In my general befuddlement, I've lost track as to who has offered to be testers of the new patterns I have in development. I've had offers on my blog, through Etsy, through Craftster, through my personal email, through my work email... and now I've completely lost track.

So what do we offer each other and how does testing work? I'll send you the pattern pieces and a tutorial. You make it, and then give me feedback. How clear is the tutorial? Is there anything I need to improve or change? How well does it fit? And anything else you might think of. If there are changes to be made based on the feedback, I'll also send you a final draft of the pattern and tutorial. So I get independant information and advice, and you get a free, brand spanking new pattern and tute! Interested?!

In an attempt to bring some order (and comfort) back into my chaotic existance, I was hoping that I could keep a record of all the volunteers within this post. If you're interested in being a tester, please leave a comment on this post with the country you live in, the sizes your children wear, and their genders. You could also tell me if there is any thing you would be more inclined (or disinclined) to test. Thanks!

I'd love to be a tester.
I have two little girls. The eldest is 4 and on the slim side. She has fab long curly hair. And the youngest will be 2 in may, she's still at the chubby stage :-)
Oh and we are in the UK (North East) covered in snow at the moment.

  2. I would love to test, too. I have one sweet girl, aged 2 but on the slim side of life. She fits 2T in length but is much more narrow in girth. We live in Austin, TX, USA.

  3. I love your stuff and would love a chance to test! I have 3 kids, Boy 1 is 8 but wears more like a size 10, Boy 2 is 5 and wears a 5/6, and the Girl is 1 (2 in July) and wears an 18 months to a size 2. I do have other little girls though that I make clothes for, that are a size 3 and a size 4/5. And were in CA, USA.

  7. Greetings from East Kilbride!

I'd be more than happy to test your patterns - I am gestating a girl due in May, have another girl who'll be two in May (what can I say about August?), a boy who will be three in March and a boy who will be eight in June :)

I actually saw your coats on Living etc and I was seriously impressed! Can I point you to a UK-based craft forum I think you'd like? It's called Crafteroo and it's very friendly :D

  8. I'd love to test. I have one son who is 16 months & wears 18 month clothes. (I also just found out there's another on the way, but shhh... not telling yet!) I also have a niece & friends with toddler girls so I'm happy so sew stuff as gifts for them. I'd be happy to try anything, but obviously boy stuff is more interesting to me now.
I must warn you I'm a novice sewer; not sure if that's a plus or minus for you. I don't have a ton of expertise so I might have a slightly more difficult time with the patterns, but I could also give good feedback on how clear they are for beginners!
    I'm in the US (Chicago).

  9. I would love to test your pattern. I am in the US and have two daughters. One is getting into 4T size, the other is size 10 (which may be beyond your pattern size...). Also, I am expecting a new niece or nephew in July, so I'm looking for a 6-mos. or 18-mos. size coat to make up for him/her (that one would be more neutral...).

I'm not a beginner, but don't usually make things as tailored or detailed as a coat (mostly dresses for my girls).

I hope we can be symbiotic! :)

    Thank you! x

I live in London, and have one girl, nearly 4, wears age 4 or 5, and is tall and wide (not particularly chubby but her shoulders are broad).

I also have a niece who is 1 1/2 and also tall with it.

I'm fairly new to sewing, having been mostly a knitter...

  14. Me too, me too!!! My sewing skills are on the minimal side, picked a machine up last summer, but am learning at a rate of knots! My little un has just turned 3 and she's a lovely rounded toddler, a little on the tall side but fits most 3-4 size (depends where you shop). We are in Portugal and my e mail is :
koolkatskate@graffiti.net. I'm sure the Portuguese will be as taken by your designs as I am!! (Grovel, grovel!!!). Beijinhos.

I have a beautiful girl, Elizabeth who is nearly 8 and rather on the round side, I have Francesca who is 5 but is very tall and very skinny (wearing size 7 school dresses just for the length), a son, Nathaniel who will be 2 in June and is about the size you'd expect!

Oooooh, can't wait to see if I get picked!

  23. I would definitely be interested in testing for you! I have a 2 1/2 year old girl, she wears 2T or 3T and a little boy who just turned 1! He wears an 18 month, although he seems to be growing fast and may catch up to his sister in no time!!

  28. Hi Amanda - hope I'm not too late to the party!! I can't believe I missed this post.

I would really LOVE to be a tester for your patterns and have really enjoyed making the double breasted coat (well.. both of them..... and a third cut and ready to sew LOL).

My daughter is a very small aged 2 - I just resized your D-B coat pattern down a bit to fit her better, you can see it on my latest post. http://rljbk.blogspot.com/

I have a 4 year old boy - who is little and slim....

and a 6 year old son who is fairly tall and slim.

    I'm in Stockport, UK.

I've got a girl aged 2, slim and quite tall. She wears size 3, though I'm not quite sure it's the same size 3T you use in your pattern. I've just ordered the asymetrical coat and I hope it arrives soon because I can't wait to start sewing! I think your designs are great!

  33. I'd love to test out your patterns. I have a little girl, 8 months. I've never sewn clothes before, but I do quilt. Like another previous poster, I would be a good tester if you're trying to see how easy it is for novices to use your patterns. I'm in the US (Maryland).

I know it's late in the game, but if you do need an additional tester, let me know. I'd be happy for the opportunity to try things out for you!

  40. I live in the United States, more specifically Oklahoma. I have a little girl who will be 2 at the end of October and wears a 2T.

I would love to test anything to fit her, especially some jacket type patterns this fall. I can't settle on a pattern. I also have a 6 year old neice that I craft for often so I would be able to sew her size as well. Which is a 7/8.

I think it's great that you do this. Your patterns are always so adorable.

  41. Oh, are you still taking testers? (Hope, hope, hope). I stumbled onto your blog and love it. I live in the US, Arizona where it's hot and dry. 1. I have several friends with children ranging from newborn to age 6 who need cool things to wear. (And even though they are adult-sized, my teen daughter and one of her friends say they "need" a fleece earflap hat like the one on your site.)
    2. I have a big stash of fleece and cottons that needs to be used (finally!)
    3. For fun!

  89. I'd love to be a pattern tester! I've got a daughter who is 5 and wears a 5-6, and a 3 year old son who wears a 3-4. We're currently located just outside San Francisco, CA. I'm a self-taught sewer who is pretty good at getting myself in over my head with projects, yet, they always seem to turn out better than anticipated! I'm also in the psyching up process of starting a little blog of my own... Perhaps. Maybe. Anyway, let me know if I can help! Cheers! RebThack@gmail (dot) com

  92. If you don't already have too many pattern testers, I would love to join the group! I have been loving your knit wear tutorials. My daughter is 5 months old, and wearing 6-9 month onesies and some 9+ month pants. We do cloth diapers, so she's usually a size up in pants. I don't have a serger, just a good basic Janome. I am in Orange county, CA. Pick me! codiandtim@gmail.com

  94. Hi! I love testing patterns! I have a little girl aged 3, wearing a 3/4T and a little boy aged 4, freakishly tall--wears a 5/6T! I love, love, love making clothes for these little monsters. I'm a self-taught sewist, I have a serger and an embroidery machine. (Not that it matters, but I just got it and I'm excited) I'm in southern Missouri.

  95. Hi, sure you don't need me but I figured it wouldn't hurt to post :)

  96. Maybe I should spend more time on your website...I never saw this post before. I'm offering my children's bodies and my sewing skills for you to take advantage of.;) (In case you need an older boy/girl for sizing)

Girl=almost 13 and is in anywhere from a 10-14 in children's clothing. I'm sure she'd fit into a double zero or whatever insane size is the absolute smallest in women's wear but I'm not ready for her to be a grown woman.

    Boy=11 and wears a 10/12 in boy's clothes

Girl=7 and in a 6 (slim for pants)

    Girl= 5 on 5-5 and in a 6

Looks like you have a lot of volunteers but if you need me, I'm game!

  97. Hello, I realise that this post has been up here for quite a while, but in the vain hope that you may still need people to test, I have 3 children, a boy aged 7, but tall and skinny and usually wears age 8, another boy aged 5, but very tall and usually needs age 6-7, and a girl aged 3, who is , you guessed it, tall but not quite as skinny as her brothers yet, and wears age 4-5.
    thanks!

  99. I will happily test anything. I'm in the US, have a 2 year old daughter who is in a store-bought 4t and a handmade 3/4t.

I will test and make anything. I also have access to girls who are in US sizes 6 to 7.

...and that sounds way creepier than it actually is.
