Now entering the ring: Contender Two

Version three of the Sis Boom dress is almost complete except for the zipper. Please don't stay up all night hitting refresh in your desperation for a picture, I'll hopefully* do that tomorrow.

But whilst being sophisticated last night with Friend Sarah, we were discussing dresses and shapes and I admitted that I tend to prefer fitted dresses. Because I am large of bust, I tend to get paranoid that everyone will think I'm just fat unless clothes are fitted**. I know, it's silly and stupid but it's my monkey. And my monkey is wearing a sheath dress.

What do you think of this pattern as a back up? I have it already, it has different cup sizes so I wouldn't have to do a FBA, it doesn't require very much fabric and it has good reviews on Sewing Pattern Review.

*I say hopefully because I made another six dozen changes and didn't try it on even once as I was making it. I know, I am living life on the edge.
** In defense of my monkey, if I had a pound for every time someone has said to me, 'Wow, you're a lot thinner than I thought!' when I'm wearing less / smaller / tighter clothes then I could buy a really swanky knife to stab people.

  1. Love the backup pattern, and you do look great in fitted things from what I've seen. :)

  2. I think it's adorable, but I have two words of caution. The first is that Big 4 patterns are all giant - you likely know that. I always start 2 sizes smaller than my measurements. Despite that, the cup sizes are actually pretty accurate, so you may still find yourself needing a small FBA. The second is that the straps on this pattern are reputed to be extremely wide set, so they might need adjusting to actually cover bra straps and stay on your shoulders.
I do think it would be a flattering style on you though!

  3. I know what you mean about being full busted and fitted clothing. It's why I mostly wear t shirts. Will be interested to see how backup dress turns out, assuming you need it.

  4. It's a really cute dress. I'll be interested to see how it turns out.

And I know what you mean about fitted clothing. It's the dreaded tent when clothes come right off the big bust and then just dangle there in space. Hate that.

  5. @KID: I saw that on Pattern Review about the straps! I am very narrow-shouldered as well so it'll probably be an issue... I was going to muslin just the bodice pieces to try on the dress form initially. Never done a Big 4 before!

  6. Cute pattern! I bet it would look great on you! I know it would look terrible on me, I am so flat :-(

I am looking forward to seeing dress #3 though!

  7. I love the pattern too, though as one who is also large of breast and rather straight otherwise, I know that such a high waistband would not help my cause a whit.

  8. I know exactly what you mean, although right now I am in the opposite direction because I had a baby nearly five months ago and I really am fat under those billowy tops, darnit. Well, it's not fat. I can squeeze it into a pair of pants and it won't feel tight, just look disgusting. This is me, flipping the bird at empty-baby-house tummy.
