The Land of Misfit Fabric

I threw a bit of a tantrum last night. I was preparing to do the tute for my sleeveless smocky so I needed two fabrics that I could use together. And I wanted them to be nice because, well, they're going to be immortalised in a tute. But, casting my eyes over my fabric closet, could I see anything suitable? No. 'Maybe it's because it's such a mess, I'll clean it and sort everything out,' I thought. So everything was pulled out and spread across the floor. Sick of it, sick of it, random, sick of it, random. I wailed on Twitter. And Meridian Ariel suggested I post my misfit fabric here so you can all laugh at me help me get inspiration.

These are all fabrics I've had for almost a year now but don't use. So what do you think? I know full well that I could use every single one individually for peasant tops or dresses. Or should I just sell them?

  1. I kind of think if you don't love a fabric you won't like working with it. I have to say, some of those are rather, ahem, special, and NOT what I would expect to find in your stash! But I love the Amy Butler coriander print - what colour is it?

  2. If you are donating, I know a good home for the red and white piece ;-)

  3. It's a terrible picture, but it's the orange and light green. I do actually really like that one!

  4. Isn't there something 'fun' you could make with the guitars and plectrums fabrics? Bags.... they scream bags with attitude at me! Otherwise, if they don't work for you - sell them or give them away. Or could you get anything else which sets off the patterns......

  5. @fluorogoddess Actually, I like that one too :)

@PC: I was actually going to try something a bit crazy with one of those fabrics tonight. Maybe I'll post it tomorrow, maybe it'll just be my dirty secret...

  6. I think the plectrums would make fab applique patches on tshirts.. and as they are so multi coloured any thirst colour would do... I think the fabrics would look really pretty paired with some linen/beige coloured fabric.. like the tops you have been making but with the fabric at the neck and as appliqued patches or little pockets..

  7. I love the guitars & guitar picks - I think those would look great together for something reversible (my taste tends to be a bit odd though, so I may be the only one).

  8. Oh, I definitely think you should sell the guitar and plectrum pieces .... but only to me!!!! LOL!
Have fun playing in your stash :-)

  9. Presumably you liked them and had sort of plans when you bought them - maybe just some plain fabric in matching colours would help? They all seem to me to be nice fabric, in different ways...

  10. If they're not inspiring you I'd sell them - clear out space for more inspirational fabrics :)

(I love the guitar fabric, and the pick fabric, and the star fabric!)

  11. I love the Coriandr print. I've nearly bought that so many times!! I think the plectrum and guitars would be fab as patches on plain t-shirts too.
You could sell what you don't like on and use it to buy new fabric that you do love ;)

  12. you def could do something punky cool with the guitars and picks for the more alternative mums out there.
cute skirts along the lines of the smocked dresses but shorter and no straps for a skirt or you could do removable straps and make it a skirt come top?
skirts could come wiht matching vests/tees?
i have a few friends who buy handmade clothing as they prefer the alternative look to mainstream girly prettiness.
    good luck.
